BLOG: Boundaries and Self Worth

RANDom thought: Do these words go together?

Self-worth is the sense of one’s own worth and value. Boundaries are a way of showing compassion for oneself and for others. They go together. If you have self-worth, you do not feel guilty about setting boundaries. However, boundaries are not the answer to all that ails us. We must determine our boundaries but not expect others to automatically follow them just because we state them. Listen to The Boss Lady Podcast Episode 98 for more on boundaries.

I believe that one must understand their own self-worth before one can set clear boundaries in their personal or professional life. The first step is to fully grasp that owning your self-worth is not being selfish. It is not being centered so much on yourself that you do not have empathy for others. It is, however, owning your value, stating your worth, and being paid for your worth in business. So often, as women, we don’t ask for what we are worth. I am not blaming women for the pay gap, but I am saying we must speak up and ask for what we are worth.

Once we are self-aware and acknowledge our self-worth, we can set appropriate boundaries. This is compassion for us and for others. We do no one any favors if we participate in activities out of guilt. I would much prefer someone not to agree to visit with me or accept an invite out of guilt, wouldn’t you? Take time today to write out your own definition of self-worth. I would love to know how you define and act upon this in your life!

Becca Powers, the author of How to Harness Your Inner CEO, discusses these topics in detail in her book. I highly recommend this book, and if you want to see her in person, join us for the 2nd annual Women’s Leadership Conference in September.

Remember, as my Grandfather always said, “Take time to stop and smell the roses”!Until we meet again, take care.

There is no Career Cultivators FB Live this week. I am practicing my boundaries by taking a week off with my daughter and two of my granddaughters.See you next week!
